FAREHAM’S HAMISH IS YOUNGEST EVER UK CHAMPION

A schoolboy from Cams Hall Estate Golf Club in Fareham has become the youngest ever winner in a prestigious nationwide golf event.

Thirteen-year-old Hamish Symons is the Crown Golf Champion of Champions 2010, beating over 100 other golfers from around the UK.

The tournament is an annual congregation of club champions from 28 UK golf clubs. Every competitor is therefore already a ‘champion’, making it one of the UK’s toughest annual golf tournaments.

The event took place at Broke Hill Golf Club in Kent, last month. With Junior, Senior, Men’s and Ladies’ categories, the day produced several winners, but young Hamish took the title ‘Champion of Champions’ after a superb net 66 round of golf on the day.

The Year 8 pupil from Cams Hill School joined Cams Hall Estate GC in November 2009. He has a handicap of 30 and has been taught by Sam Pleshette, Head PGA Coach at Cams Hall GC.

As a first-timer to Broke Hill GC, and as one of the day’s youngest competitors, the odds were against the young golfer. Bad weather made the conditions even more of a challenge. However Hamish remained calm and played the round of his life.

The Symons clan “fan club” of family members were there on the day to cheer Hamish on. His father Jerry is also a keen golfer.

In a double-success Hamish also won the Junior “Nearest the Pin” competition, ending closest to the hole on the 133-yard 4^th at Broke Hill.

Ben Beagley, General Manager at Cams Hall Estate Golf Club, said: “We are incredibly proud that Hamish won this year’s “Champion of Champions Final” on behalf of our club. It’s always great for a club to produce a national champion, and he’s an inspiration not only to our junior members but also to our grown-up golfers too! Hamish is a growing talent and under Sam Pleshette’s tutelage I think he will develop into a very good golfer over the years to come.”

Friday 20th August saw Cams member Jonathan Grindon score an ace on the 3rd hole of the Park course, within an hour of receiving a golf lesson from Head Professional Sam Pleshette. Sam said “Jon was struggling with his iron play at the start of the session, but after working on a few things we soon got him striking the ball nicely. I’d love to be able to guarantee everyone a hole in one so quickly after a lesson!”

Cobra Demo Day

Tuesday 20th July saw the Cobra Demo Day team roll into Cams Hall. A full appointment sheet of Cams members were suitably impressed by the line up of woods and irons on offer and took the opportunity to try them out under the watchful eye of our Head PGA Professional Sam Pleshette (who also plays Cobra equipment) and the Demo Technician from Cobra.

If you are looking at upgrading or adding to your bag the Demo Days are a great way of trying before you buy. For the use of a launch monitor for club fittings bookings are necessary through the Pro Shop.

Our next Demo Day is with Callaway on Tuesday 14th September. We’ll be taking bookings very soon!

Cams is taylor made for Captain Chris

Chris Hudson, the Hampshire PGA Captain, won the Cams Hall GC Pro-Am on Tuesday (18/5).

The Southwood Club Professional shot a six-under-par 65 to finish one shot ahead of Philip Bryden (Alresford) and Steve Richardson (Lee-on-the-Solent).

The Cams Hall Tournament, sponsored by Taylor Made Computer Solutions, attracted thirty-one Pro-Am teams to the Fareham course.

Jon Barnes (Ampfield) and his team of Allan Darby, Jason Murdock and Mick Cook shot an impressive twenty-one-under par score of 121 to win the Pro-Am. They finished three shots ahead of South Winchester’s Michael Mulligan and his team of Danny Randall, Neptune Bell and Ashley Payne. Third place went to Mark Francis (Lee-on-the-Solent), Derek Kent, John Burnett and Oliver Lodge.

‘Nearest the Pin’ prizes went to Scott Hunt, Brian Calvert and Damian Cain while Derek Woodward won the ‘What’s the Score’ Competition.

The Tournament was sponsored by Taylor Made Computer Solutions and organized by Sam Pleshette and Ben Beagley.

Bridgestone Ball Fitting

Thursday 1st April saw the Bridgestone Ball Fitting Challenge visit Cams Hall. Appointments were every 15 mins from 10am til 3pm and our members were amazed at the amount of distance AND accuracy that can be gained by switching to a ball that suits their own “launch conditions”

The launch monitor measured each players:
Clubhead speed
Launch angle
Backspin/Sidespin

From these readings recommended a ball suited to them. Every player benefitted from a different ball, some gained as much as 15 yards straight away. All in all a fun and interesting day was had by all!

We are in the process of rolling out a new program of Junior coaching here at Cams Hall. Available to boys and girls from age 7 upwardsm the group coaching will include the use of the Golf Foundations “Passport to Golf” scheme – a structured coaching syllabus with various different skill levels for the youngsters to achieve. If you have a child that you would like to enrol on one of the courses, please contact the Pro Shop for more information regarding dates/times of the coaching sessions.

Anyone wondering the cause of the flooding in the woodlands on the right hand side of the Park course will be interested in taking a look below. These photo’s show our green staff opening an outlet that flows into the sea. The outlet was previously rusted shut and the tide had pushed the shingle above the level of the pipe. This has now been cleared and opened as you can see. Hopefully anyone who plays down the right will keep their feet dry.

Every Wednesday greeting you in the pro shop will be the smiling face of Jack Kirkman, here on work experience with us until the end of March.

Jack is 14 years of age, attends Henry Cort school and is completing his Sport apprenticeship. This work experience will give him an insight into the golfing industry. Jack can be seen below entering competition names into the computer.
